Why are my basement walls chalky? This is called effervescence(a white powdery substance) caused by moisture breaking down the lime and being forced to the surface. First, scrape down the surface with a wire brush and then treat the surface with a vinegar solution. Prime the areas where bare block is exposed and repaint. Treat this as a maintenance problem, assuming that every so often this process will need to be repeated.

Why is my paint peeling? This could be the result of the age of your paint, the moisture content of the underlying surface, or a lack of heat which causes paint to lose its bond to walls. All damaged paint needs to be removed and properly repainted.

How do I fix a stain on the wall? There are different types of Kilz for each type of stain. You can spot treat with Kilz, but it´s best to paint the entire wall, so no underlying “slick spot” is visible.

How can I tell if my paint is latex or oil base? Put a little goof-off on the area and rub the surface. If the paint comes off, it is latex.

Can I paint latex directly over oil base? Normally light sanding and priming the surface is necessary.

At what temperature can I use latex paint outside? At or above 50 degrees Fahrenheit is the optimum temperature. However, there are latex paints that can be applied at 35 degrees F and above. Check your label for MFG specifications.

Can I use the same brush for oil base and latex paint? A china bristle brush is best for oil base paint. A nylon or nylon polyester is for latex paint.

How much paint do I need to do the job? 300-400 square feet per gallon is the normal spread rate. Differences in surfaces can affect the spread rate.
